Mike Interacting with Wayne

MJ: What’s the most important thing on your mind right now?

WB: The most important thing on my mind right now has got to be … what in the hell am I doing with my future? [laughter] I’m balancing between the new job that I haven’t started yet (and I’m already unimpressed with the people I’m working with), and the business side of things that I’ve been pushing further and further off my plate, and all the family stuff going on with moving to the new house, and all the things wrapping up from California. You know.

MJ: Is there one area that’s more important than every other?

WB: Probably the most important thing out of all of that is making sure that I’m growing and that I’m able to help other people. Those are the big pieces.

MJ: Say more about that.

WB: Yeah. I started applying that filter to all the different pieces. Going, okay, family: obviously there are ways that I’m helping develop at least two individuals into, hopefully, well-functioning adults. The teaching piece: I started going okay, how do I help people here? I mean, I see that I help students and sometimes it feels at odds with them in attempting to help them and they’re self-sabotaging (and then wondering if I’m doing that to myself). And thinking about how much leverage I may or may not be able to get out of the business side of things. Knowing what I do about what I do (and don’t) actually follow through on. And knowing enough about myself to know which pieces are interesting to me and which ones still have to be done that aren’t as interesting.

MJ: If there’s one piece of advice that you had to give yourself, what would it be?

WB: The first thing that came to mind was prioritize, right after “get shit done.”

MJ: That’s enough for me.
